Hagia Sophia
Open letter to the Board of Rotary International

Hagia Sophia has been a world symbol of history, a monument of unity and coexistence of cultures and religions. For 85 whole years, from February 1, 1935, it operated as a museum and from December 6, 1985 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to remove its character barbarically by decree on July 10, 2020.

The emblematic Hagia Sophia, the Byzantine Christian Cathedral of Constantinople, was erected in 537 AD. A church dedicated to the Wisdom of God, but for the Byzantines it has been more identified with Virgin Mary, it has been the symbol of the city during the Byzantine period, as well as the Ottoman and today. A bridge of empires, religions and cultures.

On May 29, 1453, the last Christian Service was celebrated in Hagia Sophia by the free besieged of the city. After the fall of Constantinople and until 1934 it became a mosque. Then Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish state, turned it, as a symbol of the new Turkish State and by decision of the cabinet, into a museum (Ayasofya Müzesi) that opens its gates to the public on February 1, 1935, making the Hagia Sophia the center of Spirit and Culture.

After its proclamation as a world cultural heritage monument, Hagia Sofia is protected under international law by the International Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of 23 November 1972. Pursuant to Articles 4 and 6 (1) of the Convention: a) Each State Party will do all it can to ensure the identification, protection conservation, presentation and transmission to future generations of the cultural and natural heritage situated on its territory, b) the States Parties tο this Convention recognize that cultural and natural heritage constitutes a world heritage whose protection is the duty of the international community as a whole to co-operate.

This regime came to be changed by a decree of Tayyip Erdogan, after 85 consecutive years and, thus, as from July 24, 2020, Hagia Sophia operates again as a mosque.

It is self-evident that such action by Turkey's President, causes serious grievance to the religious sentiment of millions of Christians, violates fundamental human values and directly offends international law and European civilization. And it should be treated as such.

The international community "welcomed" the decision with outcry and statements of condemnation, talking about desecration of the Monument and alteration of its character. UNESCO, which was unable to prevent this Turkish provocation, announced that it would re-evaluate the new regime.

The designation of Hagia Sophia as a World Monument is included in the historical zones of Istanbul that were inscribed on the "World Heritage List" in 1985. However, the change in its use from a museum to a mosque does not meet the criteria for its declaration as such, it offends the meaning of the "World Monument" and alters its authenticity in terms of intangible values, its use and operation. "It is unfortunate that Turkey's decision was not the subject of dialogue, nor was there any prior notification," the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Educational Organization said in a statement.

The Rotary Club of Athens Athinai, particularly sensitive and consistent with the principles for global mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, creation and maintenance of inseparable relations in the world, calls on the Board of Rotary International to exert its influence on UNESCO - an organization founded at its own instigation - in order for it to contribute by all means to the revocation of the decision that turns Hagia Sophia into a mosque and to impose the relevant sanctions, financial and others, in case of non-compliance.

The Rotary Club of Athens Athinai, having confidence in the principles and values of our International Organization, is confident that Rotary International will meet our fair request, which is a request of the entire international community.

We look forward to your support in addressing this issue together in our common institutional body, Rotary International.
